Laurent Bruttin was born in 1977. After studying at the Geneva Conservatoire and the Paris Conservatoire, he began making music.
Fascinated by all styles of music, he devotes himself more particularly to developing new instrumental and electronic techniques on his main instrument, the clarinet, navigating between experimental improvisation and composition. The development of playing concepts, whether solo or in collaboration with musicians or artists from different backgrounds, is an important part of his career. He also creates music for theatre, performance, dance and film.
His recent collaborations include musicians and artists such as director Joan Mompart (Le Songe, Orangerie 2018 / Mon chien dieu, Theâtre du Loup 2019, Arsenic 2016), performance artist Anne Rochat (SPO2 underwater performance, Vidy 2021 / Laniakea with Julie Semoroz, Ariel Garcia and Will Guthrie, Arsenic 2020 / Hic&Nunc, Arsenic 2018 / klingende Nacht, Musee Tinguely 2017), Nils Ostendorf and Mike Majkowski (Sun trio), Sebastien Roux (Inevitable Music #5 with ensemble Dedalus, Villa Medicis Rome 2016), Zeena Parkins (j'ai plus de souvenirs que, MaerzMusik Berlin 2015), Julien Sirjacq and Etienne Bonhomme (Nout Variation a spectral recollection, 2015) and Merdith Monk (Fondation Cartier, Paris 2014 with pianist Quentin Sirjacq).
He is a founding member of Rue du Nord, a Lausanne-based collective of eclectic musicians who have been working on experimental and interdisciplinary music projects for over 20 years.
He has also been a member of the Contrechamps ensemble since 2009, and collaborates regularly with ensembles such as Vortex, KNM Berlin, Dedalus, Klangforum Wien, NEC and Ensemblekollectiv.
