Éditions Contrechamps
Founded in 1991 in Geneva (Switzerland), Éditions Contrechamps is dedicated to publishing essential texts on 20th and 21st century music, beginning with the writings and testimonies of the composers themselves. The texts, interviews and correspon-dence of Bartók, Schönberg, Webern, Ives, Varèse, Cage, Carter, Berio, Nono, Ligeti, Kurtág, Huber, Lachenmann, Holliger, Rihm, Grisey, Nunes and others have been collected and form the main axis of our editorial line. Launched a few years ago, the collection Poche offers previously unpublished monographs on major works from the contemporary repertoire. The latest in date are concerned with Luciano Berio’s Coro (by Alain Poirier), Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Gruppen (by Pascal Decroupet) and Fausto Romitelli’s Professor Bad Trip (by Luigi Manfrin).
Éditions Contrechamps also organize a series of conferences curated by Philippe Albèra entitled Musique en dialogue, in collaboration with the Geneva University of Music and the University of Geneva (Nicolas Donin).
Musique en dialogue 2024-2025
In this last year of Éditions Contrechamps’ existence in its present form, we propose three encounters around a selection of our final bouquet of publications. The first one concerns the monumental edition of Arnold Schönberg’s writings, from his early poems (1890) to his Psalms (1951). Translated by pianist Jean-Pierre Collot and co-edited by the Philharmonie de Paris, it is a fascinating portrait of a composer who marked his century. During our second encounter, two other remarkable pianists, Georges Starobinski and Philippe Dinkel, will discuss their new translation of Alban Berg’s writings, which has benefitted from the latest research on the subject. Our third dialogue has to do with the publication of two colorful, fascinating and hugely informative sets of correspondence by Pierre Boulez, whose centenary will be celebrated in 2025. Boulez’ correspondence with Pierre Souvtchinsky has been compiled by Philippe Albèra and Gabriela Elgarrista and co-edited by the Philharmonie de Paris; the second is a collection of the composer’s letters to André Souris and Henri Pousseur, compiled and commented
by Pascal Decroupet.
