The Imitation of an Action
Commissioned by the Festival Archipel and the Ensemble Contrechamps, with the support of the Fondation Nicati-de Luze
The Imitation Of An Action is based on the idea that acoustic instruments imitate the electronic sounds created, in real time, as an improvised soundscape, by an electronic performer, and that they absorb and adapt them to their own specific instrument. The only constraint is that they use their instruments only acoustically, without any electronic effects.
Description
These recordings are based on the idea of acoustic instruments imitating electronic sounds created by a live performer. The core, structure and duration of the pieces are defined by a graphic score that allows the musicians to imitate these sounds.
The general sense of the piece, its aesthetics, its structure and certain more precise parts are determined by a graphic score. The piece is therefore a mixture of instinct and direct composition.
The score is by no means a strictly fixed working state, however, this does not mean that the parts that are stated as "imitation of an action" are improvised; these parts of the score must be worked on with the musician during rehearsals. The fragments of text and the performers' notes are there to suggest a state of mind, and to guide their ears. The musicians are the main vehicle for the piece.
"Tragedy is the imitation of a serious action, complete and of a certain magnitude. Through pity and fear affecting the appropriate purgation [catharsis] of these emotions."
"... it is by perceiving movement that we perceive meaning..." Aristotle
